jamiemcginlay Posted 22 December , 2004 Share Posted 22 December , 2004 I was just wondering, most books I've read seem to suggest that one turret in most Royal Navy warships was manned by the Royal Marines...and that this was always the best turret with the fastsest re-load and fire times. How true is this? I suppose a typical marine detatchment would only have provided sufficient manpower for one turret, and I can see the usefulness in creating a competitive spirit with sailors V marines...but surely the sailors must have occassionaly come out on top? Otherwise what was the relationship between sailors and marines?
Guest Galatea Posted 23 December , 2004 Share Posted 23 December , 2004 No expert on this but the RM usually manned an after turret X or Y and were good gunners. On the Ashanti in the early 70s there was usually nothing in it with both single turrets producing around 14/16 rounds a minute. The best I experienced was a sustained 32 rounds per minute in a twin 4.5" turret when I was C'apn of the Gunhouse, HMS Norfolk 1980. Relations were mostly good and still are.
