Guest Posted 30 August , 2017 Share Posted 30 August , 2017 Lance Corporal Philip Joseph McCahery - Kilmore East, Victoria. Died in action 26 April 1918. No body recovered. I am researching his movements and if anyone has information on the 57th's movements it would be very much appreciated. Cheers Phil
BFBSM Posted 30 August , 2017 Share Posted 30 August , 2017 Hi Phillipa, Have a look here: https://www.awm.gov.au/advanced-search?query=57th+AIF. This contains films, photographs and files regarding the Battalion. If you don't have a copy of his service file, have a look here: https://recordsearch.naa.gov.au/SearchNRetrieve/Interface/DetailsReports/ItemDetail.aspx?Barcode=1938373&isAv=N. Waddell Posted 30 August , 2017 Share Posted 30 August , 2017 (edited) Phillipa, I researched and wrote about a distant relative of my wife's who served with the 57th Battalion briefly before he was killed in late August 1918. Go through the war diaries with a fine tooth comb. The 57th Battalion War diaries later in the war (1918) had some beautiful watercolor covers depicting what the battalion were up to at the time, painted by one of the soldiers. https://www.awm.gov.au/collection/C1339122 There is a battalion history called 'Hold Hard Cobbers' by Robin Corfield covering the 57th and 60th Battalions. It would be worth looking for images in that book. Additionally W.H Downing's memoir 'To the last ridge' is very easy to find and he served in the 57th Battalion. Also have a look through the Trove newspaper search facility. I had some help from the local historical society for the soldier I researched that turned up a lot of information- another avenue to consider. Scott Edited 30 August , 2017 by Waddell Added more.
