Kimberley John Lindsay Posted 26 August , 2017 Share Posted 26 August , 2017 Dear Phil, Interesting. Great sacrifices were made by those gallant women. I have the K-i-H awarded to Sister Sarah Maria (Sallie) Round, who also nursed in Serbia, 1915, but with Lady Paget. After escaping back to England, Sallie Round again volunteered her services (QAIMNSR), but stipulated Salonika. There, she fell in love with a Serbian officer and resigned, but continued nursing on the Salonika Front. She returned to England, unmarried, and spent virtually the rest of her life nursing in India. Sadly, I have been unable to find an Image of Sallie Round... Because they nursed Serbs and not British soldiers, these nurses were denied the 1914-15 Star, but were awarded the BWM and Victory Medals. Kindest regards, Kim. mbriscoe Posted 26 August , 2017 Author Share Posted 26 August , 2017 I don't see Sallie Round on the Scottish Women's Hospitals website? It links to another useful site Scarlet Finders but I don't think there either.
Kimberley John Lindsay Posted 26 August , 2017 Share Posted 26 August , 2017 (edited) Dear mbriscoe, Yes, I am sorry to have mis-used your Scottish thread, but merely wanted to highlight the nurses in Serbia in general, and the English Sallie Round in particular (whose image has so far escaped me). Nurse Round is mentioned briefly in the Lady Paget book - taking turns to nurse the seriously ill Lady Paget... I have written a lengthy manuscript about the life of Sallie Round, whose life was in every way exemplary: but one could say that for Dr Elizabeth Ross, too... Kindest regards, Kim. No problem, just confused me! BBC Scotland did a programme about the Scottish Women's Hospitals a couple of years ago, it might have been on BBC Alba (the Gaelic network). I she the same Sarah Maria Round who went on to nurse in India? Edited 26 August , 2017 by mbriscoe
Kimberley John Lindsay Posted 26 August , 2017 Share Posted 26 August , 2017 (edited) Dear mbriscoe, Yes, indeed. She may be one of the nurses in the Lady Paget unit's group, 1915 at Ustiub, - or one of the nurses in a post-Great War Bombay Nurses Conference group in India: but which one..? Kindest regards, Kim. mbriscoe Posted 26 August , 2017 Author Share Posted 26 August , 2017 I looked in the nursing records on Ancestry and could see someone with the same name right through to the 1940s at least. It's frustrating when there are pictures but you don't know who is who!

Indeed they did - the picture of the three graves in Kragujevac came from Louise MIller, who made a (the?) programme. My interest is in Lorna Miller from Newbury who lies alongside Elizabeth Ross. There is a link to the programme at the end of my attempt at Lorna's story: http://westberkshirewarmemorials.org.uk/texts/stories/WBP00880S.php
mbriscoe Posted 27 August , 2017 Author Share Posted 27 August , 2017 The British Newspaper Archive has just added the Illustrated War News so I did a search for Scottish Women's Hospitals and found a few articles with pictures. Send me a message with an EMail address if you want to see them.
