Remembered Today:

Wijtschate road closures

Beselare

From 7th August until March 1918 the road from Wijtschate to Kemmel will be closed.  It is only a 700m stretch so heaven only knows why it is going to take them so long.  Wijtschate British cemetery will also be blocked "at certain times".  You can access the Spanbroekmolen crater site once you have negotiated a detour, but there is going to be a temporary one-way system there which sounds as if it not going to be too much of a problem.  Arm yourself with a good map if you are going in that area.

Thank you Bob,

Which section precisely of the road will be closed?

Not all of it presumably, as you say the affected section is only 500m.

The section is supposed to be 700m long and stretches from the market square in Wijtschate in the direction of Kemmel to just beyond Kroonardstraat.  If you approach Spanbroekmolen from Kemmel then there shouldn't be any problems.

Thanks for the update Beselare.

I recall road closures and digging around Messines a couple of years ago opened up some interesting trench lines and a channel 5 program.

Fingers crossed, lucky enough to be there when they did.

Cheers Sir.
