Piscator Posted 20 December , 2004 Share Posted 20 December , 2004 I have a photo of a soldier which I believe was taken prior to 1914, he appears to have a white lanyard on his left shoulder, does this indicate any particular regiment or section of the army. The lanyard is a single cord not plaited? Len
Joe Sweeney Posted 20 December , 2004 Share Posted 20 December , 2004 Len, The lanyard is a Clasp Knife lanyard. All of those supplied by the War Office were white in colour. A family of lanyard patterns were approved in 1901, or there abouts, with some being plaited some not. No specific regiment except pre-war they were issued to soldiers on mounted duty. Individual Regiments could procure coloured lanyards out of their own funds and some did. There were two other types of lanyards also in use; the Pistol lanyard and whistle lanyard. Both were Khaki. Piscator Posted 21 December , 2004 Author Share Posted 21 December , 2004 Thanks Joe, Your statement re mounted duty may tie in with the person concerned, he drove heavy horse drawn vehicles before the war, ergo, the army probably employed him in the same capacity. Still trying to find out if he was ASC or Artillery, but will get there eventually, Regards Len
