chids Posted 24 July , 2017 Share Posted 24 July , 2017 This will probably be in the wrong section, so feel free to move it if need be. My father-in-law is in possession of what appears to be a commemorative knife, I think its more like a letter opener than a conventional knife, which commemorates the Ypres battle. A quick google does not bring up anything similar looking, I am just wondering if this is an official piece of memorabilia or just something made out of an old shell. The lettering and engraving look impressive. I have attached some images, hopefully the quality will be good enough for people to see. redbarchetta Posted 24 July , 2017 Share Posted 24 July , 2017 "just something made from an old shell" ???!! Shame on you! That is a nice, hand-made piece of trench art, engraved by hand after the war as a souvenir of the war at Ypres. Not official memorabilia, this is a unique item. More unusual than the ones with a blade made from a shell casing and using a bullet as the handle. Very nice! James
chids Posted 25 July , 2017 Author Share Posted 25 July , 2017 Thanks James, i didn't mean it quite how it sounded. I was referring to it not being an official piece, rather than an individual piece. Reading back saying it was just made from an old Shell does sound pretty demeaning. It is a wonderful piece of which the father in law is quite proud. Believe it or not he dug it up in his garden!!
