Hugh Pattenden Posted 19 December , 2004 Share Posted 19 December , 2004 Hi, Just wondering if someone can do a lookup in Soldiers Died in the Great War for: Trooper William Edwards Jones, Essex Yeomanry, KIA, Ypres, 14th May 1915, age 17. I just want to know if the age given on the CWGC website is right: it gives it as 17. Thanks, Hugh.

Myrtle Posted 20 December , 2004 Share Posted 20 December , 2004 Hugh Just had a quick look at the 1901 census and have found that although the name Jones is plentiful in Wales there don't seem to be as many in Essex at that time. There is only one William Jones of an appropriate age in Colchester and he is 2 years old. He was born in Lexden, Essex. Taking the parents' details from CWGC there is only one Clara Jones in Colchester. She is 38 years old and born in Colchester. The only Ernest Jones in the town in 1901 are Ernest Jones 48 years old born in London, occupation Firework maker and a 7 year old boy Ernest, born in Colchetser. Taking it one step further there is marriage recorded in 1893 between Clara Jane Bailey and Ernest Edward Jones at Tendring, Essex. If you check into the 1901 census you may find that they are all the same family and it may help confirm William's age. Let me know how it goes. Gordon Caldecott Posted 2 January , 2006 Share Posted 2 January , 2006 Have you considered posting this on the Essex Yeomanry website? I`d do it but I didn`t want to steal your thunder as it were? I`m sure it would be of great interest to its visiters!!!
