buxton_blade Posted 30 June , 2017 Share Posted 30 June , 2017 Trying to help the daughter of a man captured 26 Mar 1918 at Bullecourt whilst serving with the 2/7th West Ridings. 26540 Pte Leonard Newsham Does anyone have the war diary for that day please? Also can anyone tell me where he was incarcerated (all the family know is that he was forced to work in the mines) Regards Wayne
wandererpaul Posted 30 June , 2017 Share Posted 30 June , 2017 (edited) You can search the POW records for free here. Just type in Newsham and search through the cards. The letters and numbers on the cards allows you to look at the registers of where the soldier was held and when. Also, they sometimes show when they were repatriated. the war diary can be purchased via the national archives or via an ancestry subscription. wandererpaul Posted 30 June , 2017 Share Posted 30 June , 2017 (edited) The one you have is for L Newson? Private 26505. Wrong one surely? Or they've got the service numbers and other details mixed up? the one I've shown is L Newsham #26450, which is your man. charlie2 Posted 30 June , 2017 Share Posted 30 June , 2017 (edited) You are both correct, there is more than one index card for him. General weakness refers to his state of health and front to where he was before being registered at Limburg on a list dated 22.05.1918 PA26240 - captured Bullecourt, registered at Limburg, previouly at the front. PA34949- transferred from a hospital in Antwerp to Münster 2 on a list dated 06.08.1918. In all probability he was never at Limburg. The camp was used to register ill/wounded PoWs while they were in hospital before they were assigned to a permenant camp. Charlie His name has been spelled Newsone on the second index card.
