These photos look like they were taken in the hutted annexes which were built behind the main hospital (no sea view !) to form the Red Cross section during WW1 to increase the bed capacity to 2500.

Hello again, these are the copies of photos that we have in our archives at the park. They are just on copier paper, no originals. Do you recognise any at all??

Netley Hospital had its own station and platform - I believe it's still possible to make it out on the ground.

This might be T H Wilcox: there's only one Wilcox with those initials in the Medal Cards index in TNA. http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/D5869260

I can't say I've seen the actual photographs before, however: does Google Image Search bring any of them up? Otherwise Southampton or Hampshire Archives, or the Imperial War Museum might be the place to ask.

Hi Julie

Yes the photograph is of my Great Uncle, Thomas Howard Wilcox, Royal Garrison Artillery 140997. I haven't seen that one before but I may have a negative, as I haven't started on them yet. He was at Netley 1919/20 so would have bee 20/21 yrs old.

I don't remember any of the train pictures as when he was alive we only went through a few of the photographs. I only have about half of what was there and my sister took the rest to the Netley Museum, about 1983 just after he had died. I know some of the photographs printed on Post cards were sold on as I found some of the Pier for sale. But I have the negative so have had them re printed.

Just checked on the National Archive. The Thomas H Wilcox isn't my Great Uncle. Uncle Tom was a Gunner Layer, with the Royal Garrison Artillery. The Archive one is Thomas Henry Wilcox he coursed some problems when trying to find my Gt Uncle.

Thanks for looking.

Also Thanks Soton for the information it all helps with the big picture

The steam loco in post #4 is a British Railways Standard Class 3 tank.

This dates those pics to after 1952 but before 1958 when the hospital closed. The other railway pics will possibly be the same date. The lorry shown in one looks 1950s.

Perhaps they date from 1956 when the hospital was home to Hungarian refugees.

No problem. It got me as well. Shame they didn't record all Christian names then.

If they are my Great Uncles photos they may be of the branch line that ran at the bottom of our garden in Liverpool. Now the Liverpool to Huntscross Line. I don't know why he would take photographs of them. The bottom picture could be Mersey Road station now Aigburth, but it's not very clear so couldn't say for sure.

Mouse,

Could be Liverpool area. Whilst only 45 of those locomotives were built, some were based in Chester and Wrexham when newly built in 1952.

Some were also based at Eastleigh which would fit with Netley but on second thoughts I did think it odd that they would still be bringing in casualties by train in the 1950s.

Therefore the conclusion is that the railway photos in post#4 have nothing to do with Netley after all.

Incidentally, I shall be at the Royal Victoria Country Park next Saturday for a family picnic.

regards

Alan
