kin47 Posted 19 December , 2004 Share Posted 19 December , 2004 As Christmas nears, we should never forget that the war never took a holiday. On Christmas day 1914 (now 90 years past), the Royal Navy saw the following deaths: 6 ratings killed in the loss of trawler NIGHT HAWK. 3 ratings accidently drowned in miscellaneous incidents 1 officer and 3 ratings died from illness. don
Michael Lowrey Posted 19 December , 2004 Share Posted 19 December , 2004 ... or the merchant sailors killed when on Christmas Day 1914 the British steamer Gem and Norwegian steamer Eli sank on mines off Scarborough. I do not have the casualty figure for Eli; 10 lives were lost on Gem. Like Night Hawk, these steamers were lost on mines laid by the German light cruiser SMS Kolberg.
