Boves Wood

Good Morning,

Can anyone tell me where Boves Wood is located?

I know where the town of Boves is but not the specific Wood. I am trying to track down the location the Canadian Cavalry Brigade spent some time after the battles of Rifle and Moreuil Wood.

Thanks,

Cam

This may narrow down your search a bit, but I still haven't been able to locate a map image of the reference given.

The regimental war diaries for Aug 19:

"At 12:00 noon instructions were received from 6th Canadian Infantry Brigade, as per attached copy of our order to be prepared to move by 4:00 pm Destination unknown. In accordance with O.O. 282, we moved by route march from Marcelcave to Boves Wood map reference Amiens 17, arriving at 5:15 am 20th instant. Nobody fell out of the column."

The regimental history indicates that it was about a 10 mile march over fields that had been part of the battle 10 days earlier (approx Aug. 9, 1918).

The map reference for Aug 20 is Boves Wood Longeau Map ref Amiens sheet 17".

Thanks,

I've found some mention of it as well but nothing specific as to where exactly it was. Looking at Google Earth doesn't help because there is no specific or independent wood in the area.

Trench Ref 62d.S.29.b.0.9 lands you approx in the centre of this large forest.

Modern IGN map here

July 1918 1:20k trench map here

Marcelcave is approx 15km to the ENE of the forest.

Enjoy

A 1916 edition of the 1:100k topographic map Sheet 17 Amiens can be found here

BOVES WOOD is ~6 miles SE of Amiens on this map.

Thanks guys,

It appears to be a very large wood and the war diaries I am looking at don't give specific grid references for where they set up camp. Only that they were in the wood.
