robbie Posted 18 December , 2004 Author Share Posted 18 December , 2004 Hi Paul, I have no idea why Folkestone. It is a rather large cemetery which is quite well-kept too. Am going back in the morning if anyone wants pics. Robbie PS Will take another of this memorial, too. Hopefully it might be a brighter day. HERITAGE PLUS Posted 19 December , 2004 Share Posted 19 December , 2004 It could be there because large numbers of MGC went overseas from Folkestone. This is from A County Boy - A Celebration of Life written by W.J. (Paddy) Paddock who served as a Private in the MGC. The day arrived for our Great Adventure. Five hundred us from Clipstone Camp were hustled on to a troop train - destination Folkestone. What a commotion getting us off the troop train and on to the troop ship. Six destroyers escorted us across the channel - the sea was very rough. When we arrived in Calais we were played off the quay by Scottish pipers. Brian Buck Posted 20 December , 2004 Share Posted 20 December , 2004 Fantastic! I never knew such a monument even existed! But why Folkestone... was that their Depot in WW1? Perhaps the MGC OCA might know the reason. Some members came to the funeral of a WW1 MGC veteran last year and I think that the OCA has a website with some contacts.
