Guest Pete Wood Posted 18 December , 2004 Share Posted 18 December , 2004 Please can someone tell me under what circumstances Mercantile Marine (aka Merchant Navy) crew, fishermen and trawler crews etc, are commemorated by the CWGC....?? Does nationality of the crew count if the ship is registered in Britain etc...?? Would the crew of the 'Belle of France', sunk February 1916, for example, qualify....?? Terry Denham Posted 18 December , 2004 Share Posted 18 December , 2004 RT It is the nationality of the service that counts and not that of the individual or even the ship - as with all CWGC commemorations. Therefore, if they were in a Commonwealth mercantile marine service, then they would qualify if they met the other criteria of dying on duty and through a war cause. There are several non-Empire men/women in CWGC's list because they were serving as part of the UK merchant service or one of those from elsewhere in the Commonwealth. In theory, it would also be possible for someone with a British merchant seaman's 'ticket' to be serving on a foreign registered ship which was sunk to qualify. Terry Denham Posted 18 December , 2004 Share Posted 18 December , 2004 RT Just checked on the 'Belle of France' and there are several members of the crew in CWGC's list - all are members of the Indian Merchant Service.
