Good afternoon,

Is there anyone on the forum with a google map showing the location of the 13th Battalion, East York's attack at Serre on 13th November 1917. I'm to visit soon and would love to be able to stand in the location of the attack. Any help would be very much appreciated

Regards

I think you mean the action of 13 Nov 1916.

I don't have a map but Paul Reed's book Walking the Somme describes the action and working out where they were from his text should be fairly straightforward.

Hi Kelly,

What I be inclined to do is to establish the battalion movements - presuming the date of 13 November 1816 by looking at the Battalion, Brigade, and Division war diaries - including appendices ( here, here and here on Ancestry, which will also be available from the National Archives  - search page here). Make a note of any trench map references (advice on how to read them is here), and any places mentioned. Then go to the NLS website here. Insert a place name (for the place, or a nearby place with a not insignificant population, with its current spelling) into the search box for a 'world' search of 'category = Belgium/France, WW1 Trench maps", and select an appropriate map. Then using the transparency slider, you will then enable you to 'blend' the trench map with the modern landscape. You can then go to Google Earth, etc  to see the modern 3D view.

Regards

Chris

I scanned through the diary. What a detailed account and list of casualties. Something you don't get in many other diaries.
