T8HANTS Posted 16 December , 2004 Share Posted 16 December , 2004 Hi Were the first issues of Brodie steel helmets issued in grey? If so when did they change to a more normal green/khaki colour. Coloured postcards of the period often show the helmets as grey, and I have one that has about 30% of its original paint and that is only grey...Gareth
Joe Sweeney Posted 17 December , 2004 Share Posted 17 December , 2004 Gareth, Yes, the original rimless "War Office " Pattern helmets came in two finishes. Grey (or a blueish Grey) and Apple green (varying shades can be encountered). Cotton states that Apple green was the majority. Both paint finishes were shiney and smooth. In the spring of 1916 the color was changed to a khaki/drab sand finish. I have a Rimless "War Office Pattern" that was sloppily over painted with apple green, but the original grey still shows on the exterior surface and is in near pristine condition on the interior. Still has the original liner. Joe Sweeney
john in minnesota Posted 17 December , 2004 Share Posted 17 December , 2004 You will find some WW1 Canadian helmets with grey paint OVER the earlier khaki. If you are interested, I can provide photos of several unit painted examples with grey finish... John
