Malcolm Linham Posted 17 April , 2017 Share Posted 17 April , 2017 Pals Does anybody have any tips for searching Ancestry War diaries . I am looking for the war diary for the 7th Leicester's in Aug 1918, if tick the exact boxes for Aug 1918 7th Leicester I get no results if I untick the exact boxes I get results running into the thousands. Any help in pointing me in the right direction would be greatly appreciated. Malcolm

Malcolm Try searching for the keyword 2164 (without any other search terms) and that should take you to the diary Craig

Jon it is the National Archive's reference number - the ancestry indexing mirrors that in respect of the diaries they hold (although Ancestry have made a hash of some) Craig

BillyH Posted 17 April , 2017 Share Posted 17 April , 2017 I "invented" my own system, which might sound a bit long winded crazy - but at least it works! Using SDGW first (preferably the searchable CD), find a casualty from the battalion that you want the war diary for (preferably with a reasonably unusual surname). When Ancestry brings up the SDGW details for this soldier there is also a link to other records for him, including the relevant war diary. Works every time for me. BillyH.
