Hello,

these three soldiers are in front of the forging mill of a blacksmith, where they were lodged during the great war. It is located at Haillicourt, near to Bruay-la-Buissière (Bruay en Artois), with a few miles of the front. Is it possible to inform me about rank, regiment, army and others...?

By advance, thank you and sorry for my bad English,

Cordially, François

The cap badges appear to be Royal Artillery to me. My mind has gone blank as to the artillery names for a one striper and a two striper. Gunner and Bombadier come to mind but I am not sure. Wait for a posting from Dick Flory

Francois,

firstly, welcome to the forum and your English is certainly better than any other language I know !!

No stripes - Gunner

1 stripe - Lance Bombadier

2 stripes - Bombadier

Thats if the badge is Royal Artillery, it looks like it.

Regards

Steve Chilton

Bonjour Francois,

The badge is indeed Royal Artillery (see below); I suspect they are Royal Field Artillery with the leather bandolier (although RGA and RHA did wear them too).

Without a date it is impossible to speculate on what unit they could be with as thousands of British troops were billeted in this area of France during WW1.

amicalement,

Paul
