Whilst several of the photos of this album and/or prints of certain images have been published over the decades in books, periodicals and on the Internet the State Archives of the Russian Federation have scanned all the photos in sequence in reasonable resolution and this set includes many Russian Red Cross and military medical aspects that have not been previously published.  Motorozied ambulances, bandage/dressing preparations, group photos, etc.... furnish considerable interest and contrast to say a typical Russia flying column field ambulance logistical in field support and environment(s).

Hazel et als:  All European royalty both belligerent and neutral were deeply involved in all sorts of war relief, war charities, etc.... for their own populations and others.  The Empress and her daughters all acted as VAD and even nurses at times though they were restricted to treating Imperial Guard officers and soldiers rather than the mass of the army.  Logistical support services especially those directed, managed, funded or controlled by women by all clearly tend for a variety of reasons to be grossly neglected.  A great many women around the world gave endless hours, free labour, free supplies to some extent, donations, etc.... to all sorts of war related activities and organizations.  By viewing this album in toto one clearly sees a far better picture (pun intended) of just how comprehensive war aid was generally.

I did realise that many women and members of the aristocracy were involved in Aid work but for some reason never considered involvement by the RUSSIAN aristocracy and in particular the Tzar's family.

There is at least one picture of Nicholas II's four daughters nursing - I will see if I can find it; if not, it's almost certainly in Helen Rappaport's book Four sisters, about Olga, Tatiana, Maria and Anastasia.

Helen has also written about Ekaterinburg (the run-up to the Imperial Family's murder) and Lenin in exile. Her latest book is "Caught in the Revolution", about the experiences of non-Russians in Russia at the time.

Thanks for that info.  I have always had an interest in the Romanovs as well as the various conspiracy theories surrounding their death.  I remember years ago reading a book (name and author escape me!) I think by a BBC reporter, which almost had me convinced that some of them initially survived!

The BOOKS are available on Amazon.ca but unfortunately not kindle. One very cheap the other a fortune!!  Will look when I go home in a couple of weeks.

A few of the pictures I have seen before. Maria F was the head of the Russian Red Cross. I will try and identify  some of the pictures ect 

 

Page 1 row 1 Pics 2 and 3 are worktables Sue Light has some similiar pictures in her presintation to the WFA.org on VADs

row 3 pic 3 looks like a storehouse

row 6 pics 1 and 3 looks like lunch time at the Anichov palace where I think most or possibly all these pictures were taken. This is where Maria F usually lived when she was in St Petersberg and during WW I part of it was converted into a hospital.

row 3 pic 2 Maria F at her desk may have been taken at the Malesky palace in Kiev in 1916 where she moved in may 1916 after having a falling out with her son Tsar Nicholas II after he decided to take command of the Russian army.

page3 row 2 Pic 1 looks like Prince Felix Yussopov the man who murdered Rasputin who was married to maria F's grand daughter Irina

Page 4 row 6 pic 1 Maria F and her ladies in waiting on either side of her are Maria and Aglae Kutusov the other is Countess Zinade Mengden who remained with Maria f until she died in 1927 and lived in Denmark until she died in 1942

page 6 is mostly of Maria f daughter Xenia , her daughter Irina and her daughter also Irina who is the baby in the photos . She was born in February 1915

 

Felix Yussopov did not join the Corps of pages until February 1916. He made use of the only son is exempt from service clause in the Russian Conscription laws.

 

Other comments on Maria F during the Russo-Japanese War there was a corruption scandal in the Russian red cross it seems Maria F didn't care if members of her entourage enriched themselves. Maria F also blamed Alexandra and Rasputin for her sons decision to take personal command of the Russian Army. This made her very "upset" with Alexandra. In reality Nicholas decided to take command of the Russian army on his own with little or no imput from Alexandra or Rasputin. Maria F did know Rasputin was going to be murdered in advance but kept quite about it.

 

On Helen rappenports book "The Four Sisters" (US title The Romanov Sisters) on the 4 daughters of Nicholas and Alexandra. The is on youtube  a documentay "russias Lost princesses"
