Hi Jilly,

The amount of War Gratuity shown as paid in his Soldiers' Effects record can be used to back calculate that his service counted from circa May 1915, as the amount paid was a reflection of rank and time served.

As an apparent Territorial Force man he probably served prior to 1917 (when the TF were renumbered) under a 3 or 4 digit number. The problem is that in the absence of a service file we don't know what that number might have been, nor what line unit of what Battalion that might have been.

Where a service file no longer exists, it is sometimes possible to make some reasonable inferences based on commonalities shown in surviving papers for 'near number' men from the same unit - the larger the sample size, the better. The records for the six digit 6/South Staffordshire men that HTSCF Fareham posted show:

242560 Ash - joined up on 4.5.1915 and initially served with the 5/South Staffordshire as #418. His record indicates that he was subsequently posted to the 1/6 Bn on 22.12.1916 whilst at 9 Infantry Base Depot.

242562 Giles

Joined up 4.5.1915. His record was silent on an earlier service number/unit

242566 Fellows

Joined up 7.9.1914, and previously served as #9099 with the 5/South Staffordshire

242564 Willett

He too was a 5th Bn man (#1241?), he joined up 25.10.1915 and appears to have been posted to the 1/6th Bn on the same date as Ash.

Findmypast seem to have a fragment medical 'update' on Joseph, albeit undated and place not specified:

If you were able to find service papers for two or more men from his unit on the list, that should enable to establish commonalities of 'hospital'; and likely date and place of injury, against which you could cross reference to the Battalion war diary to see if anything obvious jumps out for that record.

I guess that you probably already know that he seems to have died as the result of being gassed.

Edit:

It would seem likely that the 'progress' report was based on information received from 26 General Hospital

There is information about evacuation chains here.
