Can anybody say what the Blues were doing when this chap died?

His greatgreatgrandniece Lynda wrote this

"discovered that my grandmother’s uncle, Robert W. Scott, was killed in action in France on the 10th of August, 1916. I have an old photograph of him but do not know which branch of military he served. He was born in Manister on 5 May 1879. I’m not sure if you could help me locate his records or not,"
