Guest Posted 7 March , 2017 Share Posted 7 March , 2017 (edited) Hello I am also currently up to my armpits in transcribing the 58th Vaughan's Rifles War Diary. It is also beyond doubt one of the finest diaries I have ever worked on and challenges the diaries of the 15th Sikhs and 57th Wilde's Rifles (see other thread) and 2/2nd KEO Gurkha Rifles in level of detail. It is equally magnificent. Sublime in fact. Here is an image re-pasted from the internet (with no provenance) but I am interested in trying to match names with faces. Please note they received Officer reinforcements from many other Regiments 58th Vaughan's Rifles (FF) Lt Col W E Venour KIA 31/10/1914 58th Vaughan's Rifles (FF) Maj A W F Knox 58th Vaughan's Rifles (FF) Maj C E D Davidson-Houston KIA 25/09/1915 58th Vaughan's Rifles (FF) Maj A G Thomson WIA 09/05/1915 58th Vaughan's Rifles (FF) Maj R F Finlay 58th Vaughan's Rifles (FF) Capt A G Lind WIA 23/11/1914 58th Vaughan's Rifles (FF) Capt A A Smith WIA 12/03/1915 58th Vaughan's Rifles (FF) Capt H L C Baldwin KIA 23/11/1914 58th Vaughan's Rifles (FF) Capt E S Willis WIA 23/11/1914 58th Vaughan's Rifles (FF) Capt C H Elliott KIA 27/04/1915 58th Vaughan's Rifles (FF) Capt G S Bull KIA 25/03/1916 58th Vaughan's Rifles (FF) Capt J D M Flood 58th Vaughan's Rifles (FF) Capt S B Pope 58th Vaughan's Rifles (FF) Capt W McM Black KIA 31/10/1914 58th Vaughan's Rifles (FF) Capt R B Kitson KIA 13/11/1917 58th Vaughan's Rifles (FF) Lt L A Gaisford KIA 23/11/1914 58th Vaughan's Rifles (FF) Lt J H Milligan KIA 25/09/1915 58th Vaughan's Rifles (FF) Lt J O Nicolls KIA 25/09/1915 58th Vaughan's Rifles (FF) Capt C H Reinhold 58th Vaughan's Rifles (FF) Lt S Gordon 91st Punjabis Capt D Dudley 84th Punjabis Capt F F Hodgson DOW 17/05/1915 46th Punjabis Capt D G Robinson 54th Sikhs Capt Bell KIA 22/12/1914 19th Punjabis Capt Tancred WIA 25/04/1915 82nd Punjabis Capt Milne Posted 20/04/1915 21st Punjabis Capt G C V M Wardell WIA 12/03/1915 IARO Lt F A de V Robertson Sick 29/03/1915 22nd Punjabis Maj G J Davis Posted 03/04/1915 72nd Punjabis Lt Longbotham Sick 22/05/1915 IARO Capt E C Creasey Lt Macmillan KIA 09/05/1915 IARO 2 Lt Dean-Spred IARO 2 Lt Mackay Sick 22/05/1915 2 Lt S J Gray 128th Punjabis Capt C B Harcourt Posted here under the Copyright Designs and Patent Act 1988 (amended 1995) Fair dealing etc. No provenance. Any hints on why you know this? Curious to understand the side cap. I assumed (incorrectly) he would be IARO.
seaforth78 Posted 7 March , 2017 Share Posted 7 March , 2017 I've seen this picture three years ago when I bought his sword and the orginal owner told me (he had gotten the sword from a descendant) that that was Nicholls's in the photo as the former told him. Otherwise I unfortunately cannot prove that.

Otherwise I unfortunately cannot prove that. Hmmm Slightly at odds with the very small amount of the I-EFA data I have accumulated to date. Thanks for the provenance. I dont mean to be disparaging but I am very slightly skeptical. There was a Corps Order that all BOs would wear the same headdress as their ORs (this clearly predates this unlike the photo of the 57th Wilde's Rifles FF) ....and all the photos I have seen to date tend to show IARO in side caps. Very happy to be corrected but I am a pedant and am seeking concrete evidence. ..but regardless of my ramblings the input is well received. I have been lazy as I need to cross-reference with Bond of Sacrifice. MG
seaforth78 Posted 7 March , 2017 Share Posted 7 March , 2017 I agree with you and always longed for confirmation myself. The Regimental history shows an officer's group but are poorly named. Sorry.
Derek Black Posted 8 March , 2017 Share Posted 8 March , 2017 The chap sitting on the bench, second from left, looks a lot the portrait photo of Captain Bell of the 54th Sikhs that features in this publication at the BNA here Cheers, Derek. Kimberley John Lindsay Posted 8 March , 2017 Share Posted 8 March , 2017 (edited) Dear Martin, I would suggest that the Officer with three stripes on his sleeve, was probably Lt-Col Venour. However, I have no proof, unfortunately. Surely the anecdote given to seaforth was plausible? I furthermore suspect that the headwear was used more for comfort, or personal preference, rather than IARO, etc. Kindest regards, Kim. On further investigation it appears this is the 57th Wilde's Rifles not 58th Vaughan's Rifles...and taken on 6th Aug 1915. Their diary records being in Reserve at Loretto Road. The war diary records the names of the Officers on 20th August: No. 1 Double Company - Sikhs Maj Henderson DLI Lt Graham No. 2 Double Company - Afrids and Yusufzais Capt Buller 2 Lt Preston IARO No. 3 Double Company - Punjabi Musalmans and Khattaks Capt Carey 28th Punjabis 2 Lt Farley IARO No. 4 Double Company Maj Browne 38th Dogras 2 Lt Edlestone IARO Lt Dudes/Sudes? MGO 2 Lt Waite IARO Bombing Officer Lt Col Gray CMG Commandant Lt Bainbridge - Adjutant Lt Mein - Quartermaster Lt Morgan IMS - Medical Officer By way of reference here is the Indian Army List for Oct 1914 with the originals. Lt Col Gray, Capt Buller, Lt Bainbridge appear to be the only ones still standing a year and a day after the declaration of War. geraldryan Posted 10 July , 2017 Share Posted 10 July , 2017 Hi from Gerry, I have Captain Kitsons back pouch and a photo of him in my collection. I also have pictures of his first burial site before his body was reinterred. Also lists of his personal equipment which the Army sent to his parents. There was also a letter from a fellow officer describing the battle in which he was killed with other Officers and men. I may be able to post pictures of these items if you are interested. Douglas29 Posted 27 January , 2021 Share Posted 27 January , 2021 I am trying to find a picture of Lieutenant George Gregory Hills, I.A.R.O Rifles attached to 58th Vaughan‘s Rifles, won his MC 30th March 1918 at El Kefr. He subsequently was a Trooper in the Surma Valley Light Horse, Indian Volunteers. Any assistance here would be greatly appreciated. Lieutenant G G Hills London Gazette entry for his MC whilst with 58th Vaughan’s Rifles 16 September 1918: ‘For conspicuous gallantry and devotion to duty during an advance. His platoon came under very heavy cross fire from machine guns, and after going about 150 yards was unable to advance or retire. He got the survivors back to the top of a hill, which was then counter-attacked by the enemy, who advanced under an extremely heavy machine-gun barrage to within 25 yards of the top. With great gallantry and steadiness he beat off the attack with Lewis guns and bombs. The enemy then tried to capture the hill by coming in on his left flank, and was again beaten back. Owing to his courage and example the hill was retained.’
