Guest billysiv Posted 13 December , 2004 Share Posted 13 December , 2004 Hi everyone. Would like to know the location of Mash Valley. Anyone got a map please? Bill
Ralph J. Whitehead Posted 14 December , 2004 Share Posted 14 December , 2004 Bill, Mash Valley is located to the north of the village of la Boisselle, the valley south of the village was known as Sausage valley. There is a map of it in Middlebrook's book First Day on the Somme, page 121. Ralph
JustinL Posted 14 December , 2004 Share Posted 14 December , 2004 Bill, Here's a map of Mash Valley that I received from a very kind forum member. The 8th division was given the task of taking Ovillers, while the 34th were to take Boiselle. Hope this helps. Justin

Mat McLachlan Posted 15 December , 2004 Share Posted 15 December , 2004 Bill, The story goes that Sausage Valley was named first, after an observation balloon that hovered about it. What's the natural complement to a valley called Sausage? Mash of course. Cheers, Mat
Robert Dunlop Posted 15 December , 2004 Share Posted 15 December , 2004 The story goes that Sausage Valley was named first, after an observation balloon that hovered about it. Mat A nice story but I wonder whether it could be true. Given the proximity of Sausage Valley to the pre-July 1 front line, I don't think there is any way that an observation balloon from either side could have been anywhere near it. FWIIW, I think the name might relate to shape of the valley on maps. Robert
