One of my old veteran pals, Harry Coates, served with him when he was Brigade Major to 168th Bde in the 56th (London) Division. They remained life-long friends, and Harry cherished his letters from Neame until the day he died. Together he and Harry carried the Brigadier out of his OP dugout on the night of 1st July 1916 having seen the virtual destruction of all his proud battalions.
