Many thanks Jim

I know have -

JAMES WILLIAM WRIGHT

Born in Gt Snoring, enlisted in Cromer, Living in Walsingham

Private 21798 5th Bn., Bedfordshire Regiment

who died on Sunday 30 December 1917

Presumed drowned on board HT "Aragon “ entering Alexandria Harbour

Through your reply I have exchanged more information by placing about a half a dozen names from Walsingham to Gt Snoring and a couple the other way. Also found one chap an Arthur Dent appearing on three local war memorials !

Pretty certain that the Cecil Farrow you list is my one. Although his is not listed as living in the Walsingham other Farrows from Oulton are.

With Herbert Baker I can only surmise that maybe he was not using his birth name and using his middle name instead. If someone has access to those who were killed and were born in (East )Barsham, Norfolk perhaps he might be listed there.

Likewise any info on those born in Wighton, Norfolk would be much appreciated as I am back in Walsingham over Xmas and would like to start tracing all the names of those two nearby villages.

Again thanks Jim

John Holmes confirms my research. He was born in Wighton (didn't know till now) but is listed on one of the two Walsingham war memorials

Sydney Rowe was part of about 300 'Norfolk's who transfered over to the Essex.

41675, 1st Essex, DoW 02/03/17- formerly 5311 Norfolks.

born a couple of mile away and listed is

Private Charles Mayes

41564, 1st Battalion, Essex Regiment. Killed in action 14th April 1917

Would certainly have been in the same batch and were to be killed within a few weeks of each.

This is confirmed by The account of Private 41946 Charles Victor Holman, with the 1st Battalion Essex Regiment (1916-1919)

Charles was born on the 26th February 1898 in Kings Lynn, Norfolk. He worked with his father in his fruit and vegetable business.

After the war broke out he joined the 5th Norfolk Regiment in 1915 at the age of 18.

"When I joined the Norfolks in 1915 I was told by an Officer that this would "Turn Mice into Men." Within weeks I was transferred to the 1st Battalion Essex regiment with "Z" company where I was sent to Ypres. I saw my first bout of action in the trenches , then due to my size and stature I was soon made into a Runner for my battalion. Quick on my feet and a hard target for the enemy. I would run across the French countryside from one battalion to another, warning of enemy advancement or bringing news that reinforcements were on their way."

For his efforts in the Battle of Cambrai in 1917 Charles was awarded the Military Medal for Bravery which he received in the field from a General, but it is not the honour but the horror he remembers most vividly.
