Aaron Nelson Posted 10 December , 2004 Share Posted 10 December , 2004 Hi, My Great Grandfather Wilfred Nelson 701492 was in the 330 Brigade RFA March 1917 till end of the war. I have a copy of his paybook, in the book he recieves an extra allowance for being the "Bootmaker". I have a couple of question about this extra role. At 1914.1918.net it describes the makeup of a RFA Brigade and there were 46 gunners held in reserve at depot. Would Grandad have being one of those held in reserve?. OR would he have been in action with the rest of the unit when at arms, and simlpy carried out his bootmaker duty when the unit was not in action? Also was this role for the enitre brigade, or was his primary role as bootmaker to ensure the officers of the unit had nice shiny boots Once again thanks in advance for any info supplied. Kind regards Aaron.
