Dani Alfonsea Posted 8 December , 2004 Share Posted 8 December , 2004 Hi, I know the Somme battlefield was characterized by a distinctive white chalk soil, most evident at the removed earth around trench lines. Could anyone provide colour photos showing this? Of course wartime photos are not useful in this respect - althoug the contrasting colour is noticeable even in those B/W photos. Thanks, Dani

tonycad Posted 10 December , 2004 Share Posted 10 December , 2004 This photograph was taken from the Ulster Tower, looking down to the Ancre, and shows the distinctive marks of trenches, picked out by the ehite chalk in the ploughed field.
