Dear Chums,

No doubt many of you have written off to Santa for a new Digi camera, I hope your wishes are fulfilled and that you have been good this year.

Now the problem with a new present is that you want to use it immediately or soon after Christmas, well thats where we come in!!

If you are bloated with festive cheer and need some fresh air at Yuletide, what better way to work off the deep fried turkey than to take a few shots for our project with your new toy. This is best if you live in one of the following areas:-

Aberdeenshire Cumberland Huntingdonshire Renfrewshire

Angus Derbyshire Isle of Wight Ross and Cromarty

Ayrshire Devon Kent Rutland

Banffshire Dunbartonshire Kincardineshire Selkirkshire

Bedfordshire Durham Lancashire Shropshire

Berkshire East Lothian London Somerset

Buckinghamshire Edinburgh Middlesex Staffordshire

Buteshire Essex Monmouthshire Suffolk

Caithness-shire Fifeshire Moray Surrey

Cambridgeshire Flintshire Norfolk Sussex

Channel Islands Glasgow Northamptonshire Sutherland

Cheshire Gloucestershire Northumberland Warwickshire

Cornwall Hampshire Orkney Westmorland

County Antrim Hertfordshire Oxfordshire Wigtownshire

County Down Perthshire Worcestershire

Most of these grave sites contain only 1 or 2 graves so we are not asking for a significant expedition. If you feel this is your ideal way of spending Boxing Day or are looking for an outdoor pursuit for the coming Springtime let us know and we can send further details of cemetaries and graves.

You can respond via my Forum email, Pm or by posting a reply. Alternativly by emailing direct to:-

ralph@southafricawargraves.org

Thankyou for your attention to this posting.

Hi Rupert

I'm already in touch with Ralph and sent him a disc this week with shots from Brookwood and some from Belgium. I live on the Beds/Bucks borders and I'd be happy to help.

Contact me via the Forum.

The organisation in question is dedicated to photographing memorials / graves of South African nationality troops. I assume like the Maple Leaf Legacy and The British War Memorial Project they cover all from 1914 to the present day.

Evening Langley,

The main objective is the war graves of the two world wars worldwide. However given the present local threat to the graves of the Boar War it was decided to try and capture these within this project.Obviously the majority of Boar War burials are in SA.

It can be seen on the website mentioned below (Day Memorial 1).

Rupert,

I don't know if you're trying to get WW1 or 2 or both, but my local cemetery has over 500 CWGC graves, some of which are to "foreigners". I've done a quick check and the names below are the only 3 SA men. Do you have these and if not, I'm more than happy to drop in, track 'em down and snap them for you.....

MADHLALA, MROGOYI TSHIKWASE

Private

7163

South African Native Labour Corps

16/08/1917

age - 50

Screen Wall. 2. 675.

MOZUPE, JACOBUS

Private

2098

South African Native Labour Corps

28/08/1917

Unknown

Screen Wall. 2. 674.

JONES, HAMILTON GOLDSWORTHY

Gunner

1372

South African Heavy Artillery

02/08/1917

27

AA. 675.

The first two are easy to find (big wall!!), but taking shots is messy as the bronze (?) wall reflects the flash - as the walls are under cover.

The cemetery in question is Arnos Vale Cemtery, in South Bristol. Let me know.

Les.

Hello Les,

The cheque's in the post for Jan 5th!! :D

More seriously.

The project is relatively wide in scope due to the long historical association between our two countries.

This is better illustrated at the main website which Ralph has engineered.:-

I have sent you an email (forum) to advise the status of the sites you mention.

Thankyou for your interest to date.

A very worth while cause. If anyone is going to a cemetery for Ralph would they please drop me a line too as my project is to get headstones of WW1 serving female casualties and very likely there may be one in the same cemetery. I have a master list to pin point them. Thanks, Jim Strawbridge

I have emailed you off forum.

Jim,

If you let me know which cemeteries you have an interest in regarding your ladies, I can make request from some of our existing or new volunteers.

For Jim Strawbridge

Jim, I've tried to mail you via the Forum but it's not working. I have a couple of shots of CWGC headstones from Hemel Hempstead and Bedford. I can dig them out and forward them if you like.
