Desmond7 Posted 7 December , 2004 Share Posted 7 December , 2004 OK here's the story ... Ginger McMullan, a 'fearless front line soldier' was also a 'wild man' (which in Ulster terms does not mean he was a fighting animal but a general headbanger) who 'stood out on his own'. There was not a man in the battalion 14th RIRifles who 'did not know of his exploits'. Yet he was once described by Captain Willis as a 'hardened criminal' - not a civilian type criminal but an offender in the military sense. But on the night of May 6 1916 during a severe bombardment 'Ginger' searched for a senior officer of the 29th Division while in constant danger himself. His efforts went unrewarded. Anyone know of any senior officer in 29 Div who 'got lost' or went astray in NML in this area (I assume Thiepval etc) around this time. Any diary/anecdotal evidence to back this up.
