Marco Posted 7 December , 2004 Share Posted 7 December , 2004 Landsturm, I only know the Bergmann MP18. Was the MG15 a heavy or light MG? Regards, Marco
Robert Dunlop Posted 7 December , 2004 Share Posted 7 December , 2004 It was a light machine gun. From material published for Advanced Squad Leader (a tactical board game): Bergmann M15nA MMG: Probably designed by Hugo Schmeisser, the first Bergmann MG was patented in 1900 and set into limited production as the Model 1902. An improved version of this water-cooled MMG was subsequently rejected by the German Army; known as the Model 1910 it was among the first weapons of its kind to feature a quick-change barrel. In 1915, a shortage of MGs made the German Army reconsider, and a modified air-cooled version known as the MG15nA (for neuer Art - new pattern) was accepted. It featured a pistol grip and a light tripod, and fired a 200-round belt from a drum on the right side of the weapon. This was issued to the German and Austrian armies on the Italian front, who found them popular and reliable. After WWI it found its way into the Polish Army, where it lingered on with some second line units right into 1939. I think the reference to Hugo Schmeisser is wrong. ?The designer was Theodor Bergmann? See also: http://www.firstworldwar.com/atoz/mgun_mg15na.htm No pics, sorry. Tam Posted 8 December , 2004 Share Posted 8 December , 2004 A book I have says "designed by Louis Schmeisser". Louis Schmeisser worked for Bergman (didn`t he?) who made the gun. 7.92 X 57mm cal. 44.13" overall length. 28.5 lb when empty, 28.5" barrel length, 200 shot metal link belt in box. 500rpm rate of fire and a mv of 2,925 ft/sec. There is a pic in the book but I have a brand new scanner and I`m buggered if I can figure out how it works! When I get it up and running, Ill send a pic. All the best, Tam

Thanks very much for that, Tam. You could very well be right on this. I just didn't know and it is good to have it sorted. Robert
