Hello,

Links between flying units and HQ or army large units are never easy to establish: some French "escadrilles" or groups were attached to armies HQ, others to corps HQ or even divisions HQ. Where could I find something on this subject for the RFC ?

Thanks.

Hi

The Official History 'War in the Air', which has six main volumes will give much of this information.  These should be available as a free download on line.  Particularly good are the appendices in Volume 3, which has detailed ORBATS for June 1917 (Messines), July 1917 (Ypres). 20th November 1917 (Cambrai), and 21st March 1918 (German Offensive).  These give the allocation of squadrons to various Corps.  These were Corps squadrons that supported the army on the ground.  Also the squadrons that were dedicated to 'specialist' units eg. in Cavalry Corps, broadly 18 Sqn. in September 1916, 35 Sqn. during 1917 and 6 Sqn. during 1918.  For Tank Corps in 1918, No. 8 Sqn. with 73 Sqn. (Camel) added later.  There is also the Appendices Volume of the OH, which, I believe is not on line (However, it was reprinted by IWM/Battery Press in 1997).  This has the ORBAT for 8th August 1918 and 11 November 1918, again showing what squadrons were supporting particular Corps.

I hope that is of use.

Mike
