I would tend to agree with your assumption though, that 'Buruto' and 'Burutu' are one and the same vessel, if not a particularly lucky one! British Vessels Lost at Sea 1914-1918 and Lloyd's War Losses: The First World War both list the ship damaged on April 11, 1918 as the Burutu, so there is only one spelling involved, the one with three u's.
