tintin1689 Posted 6 December , 2004 Author Share Posted 6 December , 2004 These corps varied wildly in establishment. This was because their strengths were worked out to man the fortifications assigned to them which required varying numbers of Companies (static) and Heavy Batteries (mobile role). For example the Northumberland RGA had one company to man gun emplacements at Tynemouth. Other Corps were much larger. There was also the Lancashire Brigade RFA Militia HQ Preston formed as an experiment in 1901.
tintin1689 Posted 6 December , 2004 Author Share Posted 6 December , 2004 For the sake of completeness RE Militia units assigned to fortified areas were as follows:- Falmouth Harwich Humber Medway Milford Haven Plymouth Portsmouth Western Thames Needles I know nothing at all of these units except that they were disbanded in 1908, I suspect there may have been others as the gun positions required Electrical and Works Companies RE in support if they were to work. Any info on these units would be appreciated. I have quite a lot of historical info on RGA Militia if anyone is interested. The Royal Monmouthshire RE and Royal Anglsey RE survived as they were assigned roles as Army Troops RE and were not fortress troops.
