Neill Gilhooley Posted 22 August , 2016 Share Posted 22 August , 2016 As the 65th (2nd Lowland) Division saw Home Service there is limited information on them. Can anybody add to what I have here? My main interest is in 2/9th Royal Scots, 195th (2/1st Scottish Rifles) Brigade, and particularly their time in Ireland for which I have very little. The main source is, of course, The Long, Long Trail http://www.longlongtrail.co.uk/army/order-of-battle-of-divisions/65th-2nd-lowland-division/ In essence formed September 1914(?), they moved from Scotland to Essex in March 1916 then Ireland in January 1917 (195th Bde to Fermoy, Tralee, Limerick, Moore Park and Kilworth) before being disbanded March+ 1918. Wikipedia has this on 221st Mixed Brigade https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/221st_Mixed_Brigade This in turn points at: Provisional Brigade info by David Porter and WO 95/5458 221 Mixed Brigade HQ, not yet digitised http://discovery.nationalarchives.gov.uk/details/r/C7364649 For 2/9th Royal Scots I have: On the 21st March 1916 2/9 RS moved to Witham. A, C and D Coys formed a detachment in the villages of Wickham Bishops and Great Totham. On 8th June 1916 they moved to camp near Terling along with the rest of 195th Brigade. I’ve listed the drafts from 2/9th in my index of personnel (version 3, work in progress) https://neillgilhooley.com/9th-royal-scots/index/ A photograph from Totham is here http://www.arrse.co.uk/community/threads/can-anyone-help-me-date-this-ww1-photo-please.246514/ Other links: There’s a good diary of Adam Douglas Palmer, RAMC, posted by MACRAE here: https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/142317-ramc-diary-1916/2/5th HLI info here from Graham Stewart https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/50289-reserve-btns/?do=findComment&comment=4294412/6th HLI info here from Greenwoodman https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/6-researching-a-soldiers-movements/?do=findComment&comment=150 2/6th Cameronians info here from Malcolm https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/24847-26th-battalion-scottish-rifles/?do=findComment&comment=1936922/4th, 2/5th and 2/6th Royal Scots info here from Lost in Tilloy https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/76257-royal-scots/?do=findComment&comment=697191 2/7th Royal Scots info here, with photos, from Lachlan https://www.greatwarforum.org/topic/161534-27th-batt-royal-scots-tf/

Neill Gilhooley Posted 20 September , 2016 Author Share Posted 20 September , 2016 (edited) Limerick, photo marked C. Knight I'm wondering if this is the same location: http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/group-9th-royal-scots-dandy-ninth-249273621 This might be Strand Barracks https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Strand_Barracks The barracks had similar wooden doors about that time http://www.memorylanelimerick.com/p789927387/h210c563a#h210c563a and a view across the river (from the house next door) looks similar http://www.memorylanelimerick.com/p789927387/h355dd419#h355dd419 A courtyard photo http://fromlimerickwithlove.limerick.ie/content/presentation-tom-kennedy-limerick-corporation-yard-strand-barracks This plan suggests the modern flats have left only the front of the barracks http://www.conniemackey.com/gallery/index.php?id=23 Edited 21 September , 2016 by Neill Gilhooley
