seaJane Posted 19 August , 2016 Share Posted 19 August , 2016 (edited) I'm sorry to be a nuisance ... I have a powerpoint kindly supplied to me by a colleague about Jutland, and a crib sheet to the (un-captioned) images, supplied by another colleague. But the two don't altogether match! And my ship ID skills are rather off the bottom of the scale. I am trying to identify the images of DEFENCE, BLACK PRINCE, BARHAM, IRON DUKE, BENBOW, TIGER, MINOTAUR and PRINCESS ROYAL. Would any kind souls be willing to let me e-mail them the power-point and crib to see what they can make of it? I really want to get this off my desk as soon as possible ... Thank you seaJane Edited 19 August , 2016 by seaJane
johnboy Posted 19 August , 2016 Share Posted 19 August , 2016 (edited) If you google each ships name and WW1 you might get a picture from naval history. This one is HMS Defence. 4 x funnels large gun clearly shown. As long as some are not the same class there might be easily seen differences. seaJane Posted 19 August , 2016 Author Share Posted 19 August , 2016 That's very kind of you John, but for various reasons I'm keen to use the images I have been sent. I can certainly use Google but it's a bit of a last resort this time.
johnboy Posted 19 August , 2016 Share Posted 19 August , 2016 I must have misread the question. I thought that you have some uncaptioned pics you want to ID?
seaJane Posted 19 August , 2016 Author Share Posted 19 August , 2016 Yup, but I think I may have misread your answer and thought you were suggesting that I should find replacement pictures via Google - oops, sorry. I have just realised that I can take ARDENT and SHARK off the list anyway, which is something. sJ

Gibbo Posted 19 August , 2016 Share Posted 19 August , 2016 Happy to try to help and have messaged you with my email. One problem is that Iron Duke and Benbow were sisters and I'm not sure how different they were.

KevinBattle Posted 19 August , 2016 Share Posted 19 August , 2016 Wiki shows some photos and also side etc drawings which may help. Obviously there is a reason you haven't asked your colleague to provide captions, but as you're trying your best here are Wiki links which may narrow down some of the more dissimilar ships! https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Black_Prince_(1904) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Barham_(04)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Iron_Duke_(1912)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Benbow_(1913)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Tiger_(1913)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Minotaur_(1906)https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HMS_Princess_Royal_(1911)
seaJane Posted 19 August , 2016 Author Share Posted 19 August , 2016 I did ask colleague to send captions, and she sent a document with a list of them with a note saying that she hoped they were all right as she was now going on leave - before I realised that there was only a part match. Under the circumstances I don't like to bother other colleagues who will be at least as busy if not more so. Unfortunately I even doubt my ability to match two photos of the same ship so thank you for your help.
Medaler Posted 19 August , 2016 Share Posted 19 August , 2016 Iron Duke should hopefully look a bit like this............ As she was at Jutland - and made by my own fair hands Regards, Mike

This might be a better view of the Duke then - Shows the turrets more clearly........
Gibbo Posted 21 August , 2016 Share Posted 21 August , 2016 Tiger and Princess Royal both had 3 funnels and a main armament of 4 twin turrets: 2 forward, 1 midships and 1 aft. Tiger's turrets were evenly spaced, with the midships turret aft of the funnels. Princess Royal's midships turret was between the centre and aft funnels, with the centre funnel being much closer to the forward one than to the aft one. Black Prince had 4 funnels and 6 single turrets, 1 forward, 1 aft and 2 on each side. She also had 10 guns in casemates, 5 on each side. Minotaur and Defence were sister ships and you would have to be very expert on ship recognition to tell them apart. They both had 4 funnels, a twin turret forward, another twin turret aft and 5 single turrets on each side. Iron Duke and Benbow were also sisters, so hard to tell apart. This is a long shot but worth a try. Right click on a picture and select 'save as' from the menu. The dialog box that appears might show the name of the picture which might include the ship's name. It will, however, probably just say Picture1.
