leanes-trench Posted 3 December , 2004 Share Posted 3 December , 2004 Greetings all. Can anyone provide me with information about the sinking of the British transport Ramazan on September 19, 1915? I know that she was carrying Indian reinforcements for Gallipoli and suffered the loss of one crew member, but that's it. Who was she sunk by? Or was she just damaged? Anything would be of help. Many thanks, Leanes-trench.
Michael Lowrey Posted 4 December , 2004 Share Posted 4 December , 2004 Leanes-trench, The unarmed 3,477 grt steamer Ramazan was indeed sunk on Sept. 19, 1915 by gunfire from the German submarine U 35 55 miles SW of Cerigotto Island. Michael Wilson and Paul Kemp, in Mediterranean Submarines; Submarine Warfare in World War One give a figure of about 300 Indian soldiers killed in addition to the one crewmember. U 35's commanding officer was Waldemar Kophamel, who would go on to win the Pour le Meríte. Best wishes, Michael
