Scottish Voluntary Aid Detachment Titles

Each Voluntary Aid Detachment {V.A.D.} had to be registered with the War Office. Once this happened they were allocated a number. This was an odd number for male detachments, and an even number for female detatchments. Each V.A.D. belonged to either a County or City, and were therefore known by the County or City name followed by their registration number. All male V.A.D.s in a County or City started from number 1, and all female V.A.D.s started from number 2. Therefore Linlithgowshire V.A.D. 2 and Dundee 4 were female detachments. Aberdeen 3 and Aberdeen 1 were male detachments.

  Detachments were generally described by their County or City name followed by their registration name in official correspondence. All detachments also had a local name added, so they would generally be known within their County or City by that name. Therefore a member of Linlithgowshire V.A.D. 2 {Armadale} would consider herself belonging to Armadale V.A.D., and her county colleagues would belong to Bathgate, Linlithgow or Uphall V.A.D. s etc.

 A main source of information on V.A.D. members is the British Red Cross service records, recently transcribed and available to search, for free, at   http://www.redcross.org.uk/About-us/Who-we-are/History-and-origin/First-World-War/Volunteers-during-WW1    In all the records I have looked at only the County/City and registration number are shown. Searches can be made by address given on the record card, but this is generally the address of the member in early 1919, when the cards were written out. {Some addresses are in Australia or Canada}. It therefore follows that knowing the number and locality of a particular detachment will assist in tracing members.

A couple of Scottish Territorial Red Cross Brigade badges. 

The British Red Cross Medal Society for War Service has been privately inscribed V.A.D. EDINr 4. I take that to be:

City of Edinburgh V.A.D. 4 – West Edinburgh 2

Have you any ideas which hospital that V.A.D. might have been based at?

I think Evelyn Clare Hayter nee´ Bayly-Jones may have been living at 24 Torphichen Street, Edinburgh at the time.

Hello ZeZe,

   You are correct about the unit. It was the second female Detachment for the City of Edinburgh, so was probably formed in late 1914.

  There is no Red Cross record card for Evelyn Clare Hayter, but this is not surprising. There are no record cards for those who belonged to the Scottish Branch of the British Red Cross, and only worked in Scotland. It is not known if the Scottish Branch issued these cards to their members, or the cards issued by the B.R.C. It's interesting to think that they were issued and are sitting in some repository waiting to be discovered. The lack of a card could mean that Evelyn never served outwith Scotland, although not everyone who served outwith Scotland has a B.R.C. card. What I am really saying is that I don't know which hospital Evelyn served in, if any. Some VAD's didn't serve in hospitals, and concentrated on fundraising or taking patients on trips. I have a book which describes the Red Cross hospitals of South-East Scotland, covering from the Borders to Fife, so including Edinburgh. It includes names of long serving members, {certainly not complete} but Evelyn Hayter is not named.

Thanks for the explanation as to why I couldn’t find a Red Cross card for Evelyn Clare Hayter. There appears to be very little information about the actions of the Scottish V.A.D. in the newspaper archives.

Just out of interest I did trace Evelyn under ‘Mrs Henry Hayter’ to living at Hove in 1921. By 1928 she was already the Commandant of the Uckfield branch of the Red Cross and she appears in the Sussex Express, Friday June 1, 1934, p.18 in charge of ‘her’ V.A.D. unit demonstrating preparedness for a gas attack, wearing her badges in one of the photos. I think Evelyn must have retired from being Commandant of the unit a year or two before 1939.

Hello ZeZe,

   Some V.A.D.'s are quite well recorded in newspapers, but some are not. In my area, then Linlithgowshire, the Armadale Detachment was well reported, but there is practically nothing on the Queensferry Detachment. Perhaps it helped if someone in the Detachment knew a reporter?

  It's great you have a photo of Evelyn wearing the medals.

  Evelyn may have come out of retirement during WW2.
