DCLI Posted 3 December , 2004 Share Posted 3 December , 2004 Is there anyway of finding out what battalion someone was in? I have various medals and I want to know where the recipient served - is this possible. Are there army lists anywhere? Any help would be gratefully received regards
Chris_Baker Posted 3 December , 2004 Share Posted 3 December , 2004 Very straightforward. Find the man's medal index card. Then from there find his medal rolls. For infantry, this will give his battalion. From there, you can get a high-level summary history from this site, or you can refer to the battalion war diaries. Army Lists only cover commissioned officers.
Muerrisch Posted 4 December , 2004 Share Posted 4 December , 2004 For infantry, this will give his battalion. Not necessarily, I fear. As an example, RWF: yes for 1914 star roll, no for 1914-1915. Which is a pity. Oh, and you don't need to go via the MiC, there is a perfectly good unit index so that one can call up the roll without the eyestrain. DCLI Posted 4 December , 2004 Author Share Posted 4 December , 2004 Thanks - but I'm still a bit lost. I have an MIC. For the Victory & BWM it reads C/1/101 or 102 BS, for the 14-15 Star it reads C/1/4/B Sorry but where do I go from here? He is from the DCLI. According to his MIC he went to F/F 26.1.15 but in the Locations of British Cavalry, Infantry and Machine Gun Units 1914 -1924, none of the DCLI units went out then. Could he have been a replacemnet or late arrival? Thanks

Army Lists only cover commissioned officers. DCLI, The BWM/Victory medal roll usually specifies the Bn details. If he won a 1914 Star, this will have the unit with which he won the medal at the top of the roll. Some of the 14/15 Star rolls do contain Bn info for eg the MGC specifically where the soldier previously served with an infantry unit, generally however they do not There are some units for which the BWM/Victory medal roll has no Bn/Coy info: RAMC ASC MGC Lab Corps Some Essex Regt Some Bedfordshire RA except RGA. The DCLI BWM/Victory medal rolls do give Bn info. Once again there is no genral rule - it is very much unit/Regt/Corps specific! I hope this helps, Ian

Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 4 December , 2004 Share Posted 4 December , 2004 All the medal rolls are at the National Archives, Kew.
