Maureen - thanks for this. Lovely story.

Incidentally, and to avoid confusion, the '2nd Lancers' reference must not confuse this with the 2nd Lancers (Gardner's Horse). The article and memorial refer to the 2nd Reformed Cavalry of the Nizam of Hyderabad's army; it came into British service in 1826, becoming the 2nd Cavalry of the Nizam's Contingent in 1854 and the 2nd Lancers of the Hyderabad Contingent in 1890. In 1903 it became the 29th Deccan Horse, amalgamating with the 20th Deccan Horse (formerly the 1st Cavalry, etc) as the Royal Deccan Horse.

Gardner's was a different regiment, raised in 1809 by Colonel Gardnet, late of the (IIRC) Mahratta service. That regiment became the 2nd Bengal Lancers and was renamed as the 2nd Lancers on the reorganisation of the early 20th century.
