Remembered Today:

Who are these guys?

I am researching all the men with the surname ROWLES.

The following only have a Medal Index Card and owing to the common christian name I cannot identify them.

Can anyone suggest any new places to look for any information such as age or place of birth or anything that might help.

Ambrose Rowles, Royal Field Artillery, Driver, 92712

Harry Rowles, Royal Field Artillery, Driver, No. 121265

James Rowles, Royal Garrison Artillery, Gunner, No. 200551

William Rowles, Royal Field Artillery, Gunner, No. 230236

Have you tried IWM Lives of the First World War? - they can provide varying few/many details and records and sometimes have photos. http://www.iwm.org.uk/corporate/projects-partnerships/lives-of-the-first-world-war and you can search records further with their FindMyPast partner for free/inexpensively.

Ambrose Rowles 92712 - https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/3844319

Harry Rowles 121265 https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/3844412

James Rowles 200551 https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/3844428

William Rowles 230236 https://livesofthefirstworldwar.org/lifestory/3844491

No photos I fear.

Or maybe that was why you were asking ;-)

P.S. Don't know if you have seen images of the actual MIc, can be informative - for free try: http://search.ancestry.co.uk/search/db.aspx?dbid=1262&o_iid=60894&o_lid=60894&o_sch=Web+Property

Can also try London/Edinburgh Gazette for any mentions or Gallantry awards/Citations: https://www.thegazette.co.uk/

Surname and Number usually works well (can narrow by date if needed)

Stuart,

I cannot help with your specific query but you may be interested to know that there are photos of 3 Rowles soldiers in the pictorial Cheltenham Chronicle & Glos Graphic.

Here is one from 18 Aug 1917

The other 2 are also pictured in groups and are from Nov 1915 and Oct 1916, if you PM me I can let you have all 3 in a higher resolution than posting here.

In the photo Driver Rowles is stated as being from Gloucester. I think this would be  Herbert Rowles as there is a list in the Gloucester Journal of 12 September 1914 that

seems to fit, and on Ancestry in both the 1911 census and electoral registers the Rowles family including  Herbert are at 10 Adelaide Street, Gloucester

Thanks for the newspaper photo Dave. That's brilliant. I have not seen that before. Much appreciated.

Thanks also to Matlock, but nothing listed in 'Lives of the First World War'.
