Guest Carmen Posted 27 June , 2016 Share Posted 27 June , 2016 Forum members may be interested in an unusual tribute to the members of the Glasgow Pals Battalions which will be on display on the railings outside the People's Palace/Winter Gardens on Glasgow Green during July and August 2016. Since January this year, Glasgow-based SOCK (Somme Observed Community Knitting) group have been collecting knit or crochet squares, one for every member of the three Glasgow Pals Battalions, whose first major engagement in WW1 was the Battle of the Somme, from July to November 1916. These were 15th (Tramways) Battalion, 16th (Boys Brigade) Battalion and 17th (Chamber of Commerce) Battalion Highland Light Infantry. The squares have been combined into blanket-sized panels which will be on display from 3rd July to 26 August 2016 (excluding 30 July). Free leaflets and postcards relating to the project will be available inside the People's Palace, which also has its own very interesting WW1 exhibition. The museum is closed on a Monday. The installation will be official opened on Sunday 3rd July 2016 at 12 noon. All are welcome to this public event.
