Jonathan Saunders Posted 1 December , 2004 Share Posted 1 December , 2004 Can anyone confirm whether Royal Navy personnel received Queen Mary's Christmas tin or something similar? Many thanks.
DirtyDick Posted 1 December , 2004 Share Posted 1 December , 2004 Anecdotal, I know, but I believe my g-grandfather received one and he was serving at sea in 1914/15: and I should imagine the Navy would have been peed-off if they had missed out on free choccy and fags (UK fags, although I believe they also quite liked the US sort on long voyages ). redbarchetta Posted 1 December , 2004 Share Posted 1 December , 2004 Hi Signals, Yes, the navy got them too. All Navy personnel, "including minesweepers and dockyard officials". Officers and men got the box with tobacco, cigs, pipe, bullet pencil, Christmas card and the picture of HRH. Boys got just the box, bullet pencil & card. This is from an article in a militaria magazine from 1980... Jim
Guest Ian Bowbrick Posted 2 December , 2004 Share Posted 2 December , 2004 Jon, The Navy did indeed! The postcard of the King & Queen sent with the gift however was different - the Navy had one of the King wearing an Admiral's uniform as opposed to the Army who had one of the King in army uniform.
