Did Colonel, later Major-General William Holmes commit a war crime by subjecting some German civilians to the same punishment they meted out to a hapless English missionary? You make a judgement.

 

Also, we see the SS Matunga come and go from Rabaul in late 1914. On a later run in 1917, she was unfortunate enough to meet the German raider SMS Wolf. Her story is also told here by a 15 year old deck hand (Courtesy of a transcript held by the NSW State Library).
