Goosegirdle Posted 20 September , 2017 Author Share Posted 20 September , 2017 G'day folks, I'm a little late with this one but here it is.... This episode is the first of two providing a first hand account of conditions right at the end of the 3rd Ypres Offensive, the next one from the left of the final push into Passchendaele itself. http://traffic.libsyn.com/6bobaday/Episode_2.33_Over_the_duckboards.mp3 Thanks Gren & John and to anyone else in the forum that is listening! johntanner Posted 26 January , 2018 Share Posted 26 January , 2018 After ten hours on the road last week almost caught up and still finding it fascinating. What’s on the stocks after Percy’s diary? John
Goosegirdle Posted 2 February , 2018 Author Share Posted 2 February , 2018 Hi folks, Here is something a little different. This a link to Episode 1.6 in the earlier Len Jones series. I remixed the original which was not up to my standard. The sound is better but not perfect. Let's see what you think. It is an action packed episode, well worth a listen (IMHO) if you haven't heard it: http://traffic.libsyn.com/6bobaday/Episode_1.6_Rats_as_big_as_cats_Remix.mp3 Hi John, Not sure yet, but might do the diary of a guy that served in the new Guinea campaign of late 1914. Goosegirdle Posted 7 March , 2018 Author Share Posted 7 March , 2018 Hi folks, This is Percy Smythe at his descriptive best. I think it is the best episode from the whole series.....Like this: "another poor wretch lay back against the side of the trench. The raw torn flesh showed where both legs had been blown off at the knees. His right arm was shattered from wrist to shoulder, a mass of bloody pulp. His mouth was badly broken and his head and body were covered with blood. Yet he was quite conscious, and kept asking plaintively, "When are they going to take me away?" Anyway, here is the direct link, I promise you won't be disappointed with this one: http://traffic.libsyn.com/6bobaday/Episode_2.43_Mont_St_Quentin.mp3 Please feel free to let people know about this episode, share tweet, whatever!! Goosegirdle Posted 26 May , 2018 Author Share Posted 26 May , 2018 (edited) Post war Germanyat the ocupied Rheinland, Belgium and Strasbourg. Magical clocks, thieving waiters, mad ex frontschwein, an Englishwoman who had been stuck in wartime Coln, trains up the riverside, the Bridge at Remagen, crazy sculptures in Brussels, castles, cathedrals and museums. Here's a bit... "I saw something in the window of a house which caught my attention. It appeared to be a cut-out poster or picture of a hideous face like the cartoons one sees of mad Bolsheviks, thick grizzled beard and a mop of grizzled hair, and a horrible expression on the face. As I walked past looking at it in wonder at the very hideousness of it, the supposed picture suddenly started back violently as it caught sight of me, the eyes bulged out of their sockets and stared as though I were some frightful apparition. This made the face look more horrible and unearthly than ever. I was greatly astonished, and it made one feel uncomfortable to be the object of that ghastly maniacal stare. Obviously the fellow was a maniac, possibly a German soldier gone mad at the war and filled with sudden terror at sight of anyone in khaki. I looked back as I went on, and the awful face kept moving around the window to keep me in view, until the foliage of a tree came between". http://traffic.libsyn.com/6bobaday/Episode_2.46_Occupation.mp3 Edited 26 May , 2018 by Goosegirdle
Goosegirdle Posted 9 June , 2018 Author Share Posted 9 June , 2018 Wedding day at last, officiated by Rev. (Major) Andrew James Campbell, formerly the Chaplain to 1/5th Scottish Highland Light Infantry Battalion. This one covers the lead up to the wedding, deceit from Dorrie's parents, the big day and the honeymoon on Loch Lomond. Goosegirdle Posted 12 August , 2018 Author Share Posted 12 August , 2018 Hi folks, I have just re-recorded the first episode of the Percy Smythe series, better sound, better delivery (I think but you can decide for yourself) and 15 minutes more material including a missing bio of a soldier and a bio of Percy's "traitor and Mongrel", pacifist, Jack Elliott. Here is the link: http://traffic.libsyn.com/6bobaday/Episode_2.1_Percy_Smythe_Build_up_that_chest.mp3 Also, the podcast can be accessed from the Smythe Family History Website as follows: http://www.smythe.id.au/diary/podcast.htm http://www.smythe.id.au/family/index.html

Goosegirdle Posted 22 October , 2018 Author Share Posted 22 October , 2018 A German Sailor; "The proud Emden represented a most terrible sight, all the superstructure nearly swept away by gunfire, the foremast hanging over the port side, the foreship in flames, the deck full of blood and covered with the mutilated bodies and limbs of many brave men, some of them mangled beyond identification. Further the aweful moaning of wounded imploring us for help, which we were unable to bring, as showers of shells rained on us, helpless. On the main mast flew the war flag, the only thing that was not hit." https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/episode-3-3-the-ae1-the-sydney-and-the-emden/id1086529863?i=1000422262343&mt=2 http://traffic.libsyn.com/6bobaday/Episode_3.3_The_AE1_the_Sydney_and_the_Emden.mp3
