Blackblue Posted 2 December , 2004 Share Posted 2 December , 2004 Hi Fiona, At this time the 1st Northumberland Fusiliers were on the Somme. On the 23rd they moved forward to assembly positions at Pont Street and then attacked Piccadilly at the Northern end of Longueval. The attack failed and I would guess your relative was killed in this action. You should be able to obtain further details about the attack from the battalion war diary which would be held at the PRO. SteveE Posted 2 December , 2004 Share Posted 2 December , 2004 Fiona I have the medal index card but don't understand the following It looks like the theatre of war says CD France or (1) France and he entered it on 3/8/ 157?? It looks as if this question hasn't been answered directly so here goes. The MIC shows that he entered a theatre of war, in this case (1) France on 3rd August 1915 (It shows as 3/8/15 nothing else after it). There are numerous threads on the forum which discuss whether the date is for embarkation in the UK or disembarkation in the theatre of war but seeing as how it's only a short hop over to France I guess that in this case it could be both. Hope this helps Steve
