Guest elmmurphy Posted 1 December , 2004 Share Posted 1 December , 2004 I would be grateful for help in identifying where, when and for what deed my uncle R G Mcvitty won the DCM. He was a QMS with the Duke of Cornwalls Light Infantry No. 8166. However, when he received the medal he was on secondment to another regiment according to the DOCLI. We have been to the DOCLI museum and the National Archives with no luck. The London Gazette of the 1st Jan 1917 and 13 Feb 1917 only mention conspicuous gallantry. Thank You Evelyn Murphy
HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 1 December , 2004 Share Posted 1 December , 2004 If the Published Citation is one of the "General" ..."For Conspicious Gallantry"type, then unfortunately, barring finding a mention of his Gallantry in the Unit War Diary,He was Serving With{Check MiC to see which Units he served with}I suspect the only place you may find some description of his Action{If @ All} is in the Local Paper of his Home Town @ the time{This may involve a lengthy search of many Weeks Papers to find a mention of him,as Awards were often Published many months after the Actions for which they were awarded.
