Theatre code 5a is Mesopotamia However The Date of entry is the Date The Battalion arrived at Galipoli (theatre code 2b) in the Balkans theatre, going on to Mesopotamia the following year .But The 1914- 1915 Medal roll from which the index card was produced has the entire Battalion arriving in Mesopotamia! Intriguing.

Edit According to discovery there does not appear to be a Bn War diary For Gallipoli. WO95/5156 covers Mesopotamia from feb 1916 ( not yet digitised)

The Kings Own Museum is in Lancaster City Centre and the web site is at www.kingsownmuseum.plus.com Notes on the 6th Bn show 09/08/1914 Raised in Lancaster, 13/06/1915 embarked for Egypt, 06/07/1915 arrived Gallipoli, 05/08/1915 joined 38 Infantry Brigade of 13 Div, 20/12/1915 evacuated Gallipoli, 23/01/1916 arrived Port Said, 27/02/1916 arrived Mesopotamia, Basra. There are some photographs as well. The museum is well worth a visit.

If His home address was 5 Nelson place Rusholme Manchester then he has an entry in the National Roll of the Great war. and was severely wounded during the landings at Suvla bay in August 1915. evacuated to the UK he served on the western front on recovery being wounded twice more and mentioned in despatches. If so he never set foot in Mesopotamia, and the theatre code 5a is a clerical error by the record office compiling the Medal rolls

Don't believe a word you read in the National Roll unless you can confirm it from other sources. It's riddled with inaccuracies - often inaccuracies very obvious to even the most casual researcher.

Thanks for the warning John. There is certainly nothing in the War and Victory medal roll to suggest a transfer to the Western Front. But there is a conflict between the 1914-1915 Star roll saying 5a and the account of the regimental museum and others of the battalion fighting at Gallipoli.

His mentioned in despatches was one of Haighs dispatches, So I presume that  would mean it was from the western front ,
