Guest webbhead Posted 1 December , 2004 Share Posted 1 December , 2004 In memory of Pierre Berton: 1920-2004 Pierre Berton did more than any other historian to keep the memory of war alive in Canada. Beyond that, he was a charismatic speaker, a sharp intellectual, and a champion of the underdog. His classic books Vimy and Marching As to War: Canada's Turbulent Years, 1899-1954 are two brilliant and accessible works which will define popular military history in Canada for decades to come. He will be missed.
andigger Posted 1 December , 2004 Share Posted 1 December , 2004 I only just read Vimy for the first time, and wish I had started much earlier with his excellent prose. It seems that with the dwindling veterans, 2004 has also been a year when we have lost great historians. What I wouldn't give to have a spot on the cloud in heaven where no doubt Berton and Terraine are sharing some great stories. Andy

Terry Posted 1 December , 2004 Share Posted 1 December , 2004 A very real loss to Canada. On this forum we tend to look at things military, but Berton did the same thing for many different aspects in Canadian life, from the construction of the railroad to the exploration of the Arctic. He will be missed.
Ste Posted 1 December , 2004 Share Posted 1 December , 2004 I'm sorry to hear about his death. I've only read one of his books (Vimy, review posted in this section) but I thoroughly enjoyed it. R.I.P. S
