Robyn FitzGerald Posted 21 May , 2016 Share Posted 21 May , 2016 I am trying to place this photo of my grandfather, Frederick Murray Hannaford (Reg.no.#56434) who served in the NZ Rifle Brigade in WW1. The photo has "Ave Maria" written on the back of it. We had incorrectly thought that the photo was of him returning home to NZ after the war but I now know that's not correct as he returned home to NZ on the SS Tainui on 8/8/1919. I guess I'd like confirmation please that he is, in fact, in uniform. I have posted the photo under the "ships/vessels" forum as well, trying to find out something about the ship and also where he was likely to have been going on it. It's not the ship he was returned to England on from France after he was wounded. Thanks for any help that you can give. Robyn
sotonmate Posted 23 May , 2016 Share Posted 23 May , 2016 This man is a Lance Corporal of the NZRB of 1914-1918. The attire of the man in your photo might be for any soldier ! Could even be a mix of civvy and military. Brown (?) shoes might be seen as unusual for a Private but may just be a part of an off duty mix for comfort purposes. Ron Clifton Posted 23 May , 2016 Share Posted 23 May , 2016 I don't think military trousers had turn-ups either. Ron
Robyn FitzGerald Posted 23 May , 2016 Author Share Posted 23 May , 2016 Thank you both for your replies. He seems to be relaxing on board with a book, so maybe he is in a mix of uniform and civvy. Robyn
