Hi Prentice & welcome to the forum

If you could post any info you have on him, someone may be able to help out perhaps? Several sources of info are available:

Service Record (although only around a third survived); PRO

Medal Index card - on line at the PRO

Medal Rolls for the unit he served in; PRO

If he was KIA, cwgc and sdgw will have entries for him

Battalion / Unit War Diaries

Local paper entries at the local libraries usually

Books on the unit he served in

etc ...

Then, Id suggest you find out what his unit did, where they were and things like that to add meat to the story if you wanna get into details?

BTW, only details but could '117 France' be '1(a) France' praps? Did he earn the British War Medal too?

Good luck

Steve :D
