HarryBettsMCDCM Posted 30 November , 2004 Share Posted 30 November , 2004 It might depend on his Battalion for example the 2nd Suffolk Regt were Devasted in 1914 & Possibly Men Wounded with them would have been posted on Recovery; The 7th Bn,Suffolk Regt was Disbanded in 1918 & its Men Posted,Mainly to the Cambridgeshire Regt but Some to the Northamptonshires,He could have been posted for a Number of Reasons,Possibly before he went to France if a Battalion was low on strength then Men from other Units {often within the same Division} would be cross posted to Re~Inforce that unit,
cliff brown Posted 30 November , 2004 Share Posted 30 November , 2004 Try searching the numbers in sequence before and after your man (using the MIC site). This may give a clue to a draft from the Suffolk Rgt. The probable reason is that the Suffolk draft was meant for a Suffolk Rgt battalion in the same division as your man's Northamptonshire Rgt battalion. Due to casualties in the Northamptonshire battalion the men were probably diverted to where they were needed most urgently. As Roger says he could have come with a batch from a disbanded Suffolk battalion. The five-figure service number beginning with 7**** is quite high so may indicate he was allocated that number in 1918 when some battalions of the Suffolks were disbanded.
